The partnership of Budgie Crathorne and Len Parrott has been one of the prominent names appearing on the results during recent years. Their priority is with the specialist races and they don’t very often fall short of the winner’s enclosure. In this Gellainville race that was another success story for the BICC National and not only that, the winning pigeon from this race being “Kiln Red Bull” went on the following week to win another of the prestige’s races into the South East of the Country. The winner for this race is a Janssen x Verheyde yearling cock that on his present performances has a great future, as does his sister who has already shown in the National races. Marc & Lilly Verheyde of Oostende are the breeder’s of the sire that is a 98 bred red chequer cock who is already the sire of at least 8 x 1st winners for Kiln Lofts as well as other fanciers. The Dam is a gift from Mick Pearson of Strood, Kent, who finished in the sport in 2002, there were also a few other good pigeons that include the Sire & Dam of some very good hens. The good pair are based on the Janssen lines of Honeysuckle Lofts crossed with the Derek Smith lines. Mick bred her sister for Budgie in 1997 when they first became friends after one of his young birds going entering Mike’s loft. This hen raced well as a young bird 2 x 1st Clubs, then in 1999 she was sent to the Essex Combine, Thurso, 512 miles, where she was 5th Combine a race that race turned out to be very hard with only 23 birds home in race time, 8 of these being to the Kiln Lofts and all appearing on the Combine result. She is also a good breeder being the dam of "Kiln Red Gold" winner of 6th Sect (E) 18th open in the Young Bird National, 1st National Gold Ring Pigeon, 2001, from Guernsey, 199 miles and was later sold to China. Back to the winner who was on his second trip to Gellainville after being sent to the East of England Continental Club, two weeks prior to this race where he was also their first bird winning 7th Open. His preparation continued with a race from Le Ferte Bernard 233 miles the week before. When he returned from Le Ferte Bernard he was left with the hen and sent driving hard to this race, Budgie said that he was like a bull to a red flag when he took him away from his hen so they decided to pool him. This is another case of fanciers working together and with the breeding prowess of partner Len and the ability of Budgie to prepare them for the task ahead the combination is good and resulted in their second big win of the season. Their more prominent results have been in the sprint to middle distance events but they have now added the distance to their ever improving results and that is now the way that they are moving forward. The move has been steady but they are now there with a lot of hard work and it is now paying dividends with good results that are recognised by the distance fanciers. It was a smart move by Budgie to approach Len to become his partner because having met Len in the past I know that he is a very knowledgeable fancier. He is a talented fancier who knowledge is at last being tapped properly and the sport is benefiting long term. In the breeding lofts Len has a good choice because there are several strains to choose from and they can be crossed so that they can achieve their goal. The future looks rosy at these lofts, there are obviously good pigeons, a man who can prepare and race them and more importantly a fancier who can breed them for all distances.
We now move onto the quiet man of the sport John Nicholls who has been in the sport for over 50yrs and in this race comes in with 4th open. John saw home a Staff Van Reet blue cock that has raced quite well on the north and has been as high as 6th in the Essex Combine from Ripon and on the south we have this result plus being 39th open Le Ferte Bernard we must not forget that he was also 13th in this Gellainville race with a pigeon that was also 15th at Le Ferte Bernard. John keeps 18prs that are raced as widowhood cocks with no hens being raced at all. The feed at the present moment has changed to Gerry Plus but John did say that he was not sure weather they were missing the traditional peas and beans of the distance fancier. I started with the quiet man and I think to gather more information we would have to call in and have a chat one day.
We now move onto Jimmy Richards of Concorde Lofts down there in Lainden who came in with 6th 7th 10th 15th open with his team of Lefebre Dhaenen pigeons that are raced on the widowhood. These pigeons were previously all raced and won prizes on the North road but the turn round has done them no harm whatsoever and to add sweetness to the result this is the first time that John has competed with the BICC. The first and third birds home are brothers from John’s Golden pair that have bred many winners right through to Combine level on the north road. The second bird in the clock is a son of John’s 500ml Hall of Fame winner while the other bird is a brother to Black Flash John’s Stonehaven Combine winner. John did finish with “I was very pleased with the birds performances owing to this being my first season racing the south road route” if this is how John starts there is obviously more in the tank.
Ken Abbott of Brighton is 1st centre section winner with a blue w/h cock whose sire is a blue van Wanroy that was 1st Shoreham SR Rennes in a strong north east wind. The dam is a Belge stock hen that has bred many winners with one son winning 4 x 1sts Guernsey another son 2 x 1sts Guernsey and another son won 2 x 2nds at Guernsey when he always came with his brother. The Belge hen is also g-dam of Fred Hall & daughters 1st BICC Le Ferte Bernard winner this year. These birds are raced on the widowhood and go with the Brighton & Worthing 5B club, which has weekly races from Guernsey, 10 in all commencing on the 1st May. Ken starts with 20 widowhood cocks and about 50 on the natural system.
The Legge & Legge partnership of John & Jacqui from Bowerchalke near Salisbury claim yet another 1st western section. Following up with their first five in the western section from Falaise (2) John & Jacqui take 1st 2nd & 4th in this Gellainville race with their team of Verheyes bred from stock obtained from the Fowler family over at Leek. The lofts first arrival was a son of the Maverick x Annabelle and is therefore on the sire’s side a half brother to Maverick Intent winner of 6th sec 29th open BBC Nantes and 6th section Falaise BICC. Maverick Mission is another the same way bred winning 1st section 4th open BBC Bordeaux and 4th section in this Gellainville race. Taking 2nd section is a yearling daughter of Grandee x Amanda she is therefore both on the dams side a half sister to the Maverick’s and a full sister to Grandee’s Boy 5th section 40th open Falaise BICC, 1st section 12th open Falaise 2004, also 40754 2nd section 34th open Falaise 2004 and 591 4th section 41st open again at Falaise. This is obviously a good line of winners for the partnership that has plenty to offer in these specialist races.
As always if you have anything to offer these BICC cols with your winners just send it along for future articles.
