The Up North Combine was at Lillers for a second time to round up the years channel racing and old bird season, 19th July. As it turned out the race was a record breaker, Fastest Combine Race on Record with the winner, Jackson & Son on a velocity of 2035.35ypm for the 339miles fly; thats over 69.3mph!!!
A turnout of 17,538 birds were liberated by Chief Convoyer Stephen Profitt, at 6am into blue skies with a variable wind. At 7:30am there was a 10mph south easterly right the way up the country, however that increased still to near on 25mph by around 8:30 so a fast finish was on the books.
Alot of people were caught out by the speed the birds were doing (including me..doh!) but soon word got around that birds were in doing a very fast time.
Record Breaker: Up until today the fastest combine race was the 2000 Young Bird National from Maidstone, won by Malcolm Heslington & Davison of Wingate on a velocity of 1985.71ypm (Result correct as of UNC Handbook 2003).
