SNRPC Winter Update...
Author: Ian M BrownTitle: SNRPC Winter Update
Date: 2006-02-04 20:43:27Uploaded by: webmaster
January the 5th saw the committee of the SNRPC meet and the following information may be of interest to the reader.

The SNRPCs First AGM
The AGM will be held in the Loanhead miners welfare club on Saturday the 4th of March 2006 at 12 noon. It is hoped that a good turnout of members will be at this very first AGM of the new Scottish National racing pigeon Club and help see it successfully through to the next phase of its future. After its first year it shows a very healthy balance in the bank thanks to the secretary John Baillie’s very able work and the invaluable support from committee and members, some of a financial nature and many other unselfish commitments that have been given, never noticed but such an important part and reason the SNRPC in such a short time has been successful. It is to be hoped that this harmony will continue so that the SNRPC will prosper and grow.

The Race Programme for 2006
Just a reminder of our programme agreed for the coming year, it is to be hoped that DEFRA will allow us after the 31st of May to fly from France. There will be an emergency programme in place in case of that event.

Inland National Newbury Saturday 3rd of June
Reims Premier Gold Medal Race 23rd of June
St Nazaire the longest race Saturday 1st July
Picauville to incorporate a yearling Derby Saturday 15th July
Leicester Yound bird National Saturday 9th September

Newbury will be race marked on the Thursday, Reims will be race marked on the Wednesday as will St Naziare and Picauville, Leicester will be on the Friday.

Extreme Distance race
The secretary has held talks with a number of other National clubs on the possibility of being transported to some of the further race points. Dates are a problem as are the race points but the probability of the birds going with the Midland National Flying club could be a starter, if that should be the case then Bergerac may be the race point some time in early July. Arrangements are already confirmed about getting the Scottish birds down to the main convoy and with the funds donated, a Silver Medal will be struck and prize money agreed. This extreme distance race has created much interest and if racing from the continent is allowed it will happen everyone is praying that channel and UK racing will be safe. All who may be interested should contact the secretary with views or for more information please do not do this till after the 18th of February as he will be on Holiday.

The members are reminded that resignations must be in the hands of the secretary prior to the AGM on the 4th of March 2006 and once the AGM have agreed the subscriptions for 2006 must pay these before the 1st of April 2006 after that date a entrance fee of £5.00 will be charged.

The Presentation function
The inaugural presentation function of the SNRPC is being held in the Cairn Hotel Bathgate on Saturday the 18th of Febraury at 5 pm this is a change from the original venue. There are about 10 tickets left, 2 double rooms and 2 singles with 150 persons booked we are restricted to 160 guests. The president Les Blacklock of the Cumbria region and Bill Wortley the well known writer for the Racing pigeon are on the Top table, as the secretary will be away on holiday please phone the PRO if you would like to be at the presentation the phone number is at the end of this article this will be an excellent evening and opportunity to meet old friends and talk about pigeons whilst giving your partner a special evening out. Tickets are £20.00 per person and a double room including breakfast for 2 persons is £50.00 a single is £35.00. Of particular interest will be the display of Medals and our other awards these are unique and are won outright each year.

Our Early young bird Sale
After last year’s successful sales, it has been decided to hold another young bird sale for around the end of April. It is hoped that around some 50 extra special young birds will be up for Auction from some of the most prolific long distance winning fanciers in Scotland, these young birds will be direct from their current winning blood- lines. Bidders from far a-field will have an opportunity to participate by using our phone in bid lines this has proved very popular and offers a great chance to secure current winning Scottish long distance blood. This will be an event not to be missed.

Members news
Stuart Bowman of Cowdenbeath Fife a member of the Kingdom Association the Forth Bridges independent club and the SNRPC has informed me that his wife Grace after her recent spell in hospital is on the mend we all hope that she fully recovers and wish her well, Stuart with daughter Diane’s help is trying to provide me with regular information on fanciers and their birds who deserve a mention, as PRO I would welcome much more of this form of enterprise from all over Scotland allowing me as PRO to produce more regular articles on the SNRPC its members and its functions.

Jimmy Kier of Thornton Fife
Monday the 23rd of January 2006 saw the passing of Jim Kier, a very well known personality of the pigeon world not only in Fife and Scotland but the UK. Jimmy age 67, was born in Dunfermnline Fife, he had kept pigeons as young lad and for the last 46 years had been in partnership with his wife Jessie and their son David flying as J&J Kier & Son in Thornton Fife. Jimmy had a successful Butchers business for a while then went into civil engineering working for part of that time on the Tay road bridge. The families commitment and involvement in the world of racing pigeons was total. Jimmy being the President of the Fife Federation Jessie being the secretary and David the Convoyer they originally flew in the Glenrothes /Leslie club which Jessie was also secretary of, now within the New Kingdom Association Jessie is the secretary David is the convoyer and Jim did PRO. The club they Flew in is known as the Marathon club a combination from the names Markinch and Thornton, having been successfull flyers of racing pigeons all these years in club and National racing with a decided leaning to the longer races. This year in the new Scottish National racing Pigeon Club they won the following positions and awards. New bury 105th open 28th Section C , Alencon 7th open 3rd section C Cholet 3rd open 2nd section C Falaise 10th open 3rd section C and 11th section C in the young bird open from Leicester, winning the Crystal Claret Jug for the best Average in the old bird races and a Sculpted Glass award for the best Average in section C. I have only shown their leading positions, they had a number of other birds appearing on all results. These 2005 results may be the best achieved yet through the families hard work. Jim was laid to rest on Thursday the 26th of January 2006 in the Beath Cemetary Cowdenbeath Fife. At the Chapel of rest and at the cemetery were many friends and associates paying their last respects, a large number of racing pigeon names from all over Scotland and England were amongst those present and Jessie and her son must have been proud of their presence. Jim Kier, often spoken of as an “honest hard working man” and that no task was ever to big, is another of the pigeon worlds characters gone, leaving another space that possibly may never ever be filled in the world of racing pigeons.
