Bird Show Ban Lifted - Scotland...
Author: SCOTTISH EXECUTIVE NEWS RELEASE 21/12/2005Title: Bird Show Ban Lifted - Scotland
Date: 2005-12-21 20:21:03Uploaded by: thefifer
The ban on bird gatherings, including sales, pigeon racing and falconry events was lifted today.

A temporary ban on bird gatherings was introduced throughout Europe in October as a precaution against the spread of avian influenza (A1).

As the risk to the UK remains low gatherings will now be permitted to go ahead subject to adherence to specific biosecurity procedures and prior notification of the state veterinary Service.

Rural Development Minister Ross Finnie said:

"Given the low risk of high pathogenic avian influenza being introduced to the UK it is appropriate that we relax the conditions that were imposed in October.

"Whilst the risk of immediate introduction of avian influenza to the UK remains low, it is important that good biosecurity is taken and that any suspicion of disease is quickly reported to the State Veterinary Service as soon as possible".

A ban on bird gatherings was introduced on October 28th as part of the Avian Influenza (Preventative Measures)(Scotland) Regulations 2005. This implemented a European Commission Decision which required the banning of all bird gatherings unless authorised on a basis of a specific veterinary risk assessment.

As a consequence to the introduction of the general licence event organisers will no longer have to apply for a specific licence but are required to advise their local state veterinary service animal health office in the advance of the event and stringent biosecurity measures observed.
