SNRPC Autumn Update

Proposed race programme for 2006
The committee of the SNRPC have agreed the following race programme for presentation to the members meeting on Sunday the 27th of November in the Newbridge Bowling Club, Newbridge Edinburgh at 12 noon.
This members meeting is convened for the sole purpose of agreeing the recommended race programme and nothing else. Members are reminded that a quorum of 50 is required to open the meeting.

Proposed Race Programme
The Inland National to be flown from Newbury on Saturday the 3rd June 2006. Race marking on Thursday the 1st of June.

Our Gold Medal Race Flown from Rhiems France on Friday the 23rd of June 2006. Race marking on Wednesday the 21st June.

The longest race from St Naziare in West France on Saturday the 1st of July 2006. Race marking on Wednesday the 29th of June.

The 3rd Channel race flown from Picavile France on Saturday the 15th of July 2006. Race marking on Wednesday the 12th July.

Our young bird open Race from Leciester on Saturday the 9th of September 2006. Race marking on Friday the 8th September.

It must be pointed out to the members that the committee in proposing this programme have had to consider very carefully a number of points, not least of all a financial one, to keep costs down and the losses to the minimum. The following is proposed. That we fly Newbury, Rhiems and Leciester on our own and that St Naziare and Picaville will be with the Cumbria region. It is also proposed that a yearling race be incorporated with the Picaville race.

A contingency race programme was discussed due to the possibility of no racing from France in 2006. All fanciers must understand that we may not be able to race our pigeons in 2006, even in the UK. This situation is a real threat to the future of our hobby and one that must be taken seriously. We must all hope that it will not materialise.

A debate on the future of Scottish long distance pigeon racing is to be carried out by the committee, some members feel that after 100 odd years nothing really has changed in long distance racing. It is time that a new out look on where we race from, the distances we race from and whom we race with is worth researching. Pigeon fanciers’ are a dying breed and sadly too many fanciers of today are entrenched in things of old and changes of attitude are essential if the racing of pigeons is to survive and maybe even grow.

SNRPCs Presentation Function and dance
With the presentation function reserved in the Hillcroft Hotel Whitburn for the 18th of February 2006 it is hoped that a great turn out of members will celebrate this very special occasion. The guests will be Billy Wortley one of Scotland’s most prolific writers on pigeon fanciers and pigeons. Also Les Blacklock the president of the Cumbria region. Les has had many years experience in the world of pigeon politics and has given great support to the SNRPC. A display of our medals and the other major prizes will be centre stage on the evening prior to the presentation I remind members that tickets for the presentation are £20.00 and include a 3 course meal and dance, bedrooms are £60.00 for 2 persons sharing the phone number of the Hillcroft Hotel is 01501 740818 which you can phone to make your reservation. If the Hill croft is full they will recommend other establishments close at hand. The secretary John Baillie or myself will be pleased to receive your request for tickets I suggest that this should be made sooner rather than later this will be a very special evening for the SNRPCs inaugural year.

Special winners
Confirmation has been received that the partnership of Walker & Wilson have won an award for their performances this the year from the Cumbria region. The partnerships performances have been outstanding and this award is richly deserved. We remind readers that this partnership flying with the SNRPC in 2005 have won the following: 1st Open Newbury, 1st Open Alencon, 1st Open Falaise, and 1st Open Leicester Young bird.

John Trail Trophy
Mrs Nancy Trail has very kindly presented her husbands’ trophy to the SNRPC for the best performance over the Forth. The committee have agreed to accept and to present John Trails trophy starting this inaugural year 2005.
This will be presented to Pete Patrick of Thornton for his 2nd open Cholet winner timed at 06.27 on the second flying 636 miles with a velocity of 998ypm.

The following are the SNRPC top winners in this our Inaugural year of 2005.

I have enclosed a photo taken by John Meechan of their Blue hen that was 1st Open Cholet timed at 18.42 from a 06.15 liberation 12 and a half hours flying for 566 miles with a velocity of 1333, this was the only day pigeon timed into Scotland from 196 entries and wins a Silver Medal.

They also win the A sculpted glass plaque for the average in section C with the same velocity.

In section D and also the Eastern Area: John McNeil of Broxburn wins the section averages sculpted Glass award with a velocity of 927. Johns open positions were Newbury 18th Alencon 22nd Cholet 9th and Falaise 12th John is one of Central Scotland’s long distance aces. He also wins a number of section D bronze Medals.

In section B and the Eastern Area: John Bell of Tranent wins the section averages sculpted Glass award on a velocity of 759. John Bells open positions were Newbury, 123rd Alencon, 63rd Cholet 25th and Falaise with a section B position.

In Section E the Western Area: Mr & Mrs Davy Elliot of Newbiggin win the section average Sculpted glass award with a velocity of 830 Mr& Mrs Elliots open positions were Newbury 186th Alencon 119th Cholet 11th and Falaise 5th The following information and photos were kindly produced by John Alston of Ravenstruther.

Beginning with Davy’s Blue hen. She had flown Clermont in 2003 and also in 2004, flew from Falaise. Prior to winning 5th open in the SNRPCs Falaise race this year, she had 2 races. One at 185 miles and the other at 250 miles, she was then given 10 training tosses from 25 miles going to the Falaise race paired to another hen and sitting on 4 eggs. This hen was bred from birds gifted to partnership from their good friend the late Alan Emsley of Harrogate, a past President of the North Yorkshire Federation and winner of the Queens Cup from Lerwick. The bloodlines are Vanden Bosche cross Jannsen.

The partnerships 1st section E winner from Cholet completes a hat trick of 1st section E wins in seasons 2003, 2004 and now 2005. In 2003 they won 1st section Chenoise with the SNFC and on that same day they won 1st open Lanakshire Federation from Lille. In 2004 again with the SNFC and from Falaise they won 1st section E, this position was won by a daughter of their 1st Federation open winner from 2003.
The 1st section E winner in the SNRPCs 2005 Cholet race was flying 607 miles and is a 3 year old Dark chequer Cock, a son of the hen that won 1st section E in 2003.
The cholet winner was prepared by racing 3 races to Leciester 248 miles then 10 training tosses from 25 miles and sitting a 2 day old youngster. John’s words are. Without any doubt the partnership of Mr&Mrs Davy Elliot set the standards for flying and winning with pigeons at the distance in the west of Scotland.

Though I have not personally met Davy Elliot, nor his good lady I have known of his long distance wins and of his standing, not only with the West of Scotland fanciers but with any fancier in Scotland, or for that matter in the UK. His 5th Open Win in this Years SNRPCs Falaise race proves that major National racing open positions can be won in any section. I would congratulate Davy on his performances with the New SNRPC in 2005 and to his past performances. I hope that Davy continues to prove to all who aspire to flying National pigeons that winning open positions is achievable no matter were you fly your pigeons too. The photos were taken by John Alston.

Section F unfortunately has no Average winner but the following West Area flyers who supported the New SNRPC have been awarded Bronze medals. Newbury 1st section Geddes & Hillas, 2nd Barclay McCrindle & Son, 3rd R Fortune. Alencon, 1st section Ian Ross. Ian was 17th open, 2nd was A & R Reid of Beith. Cholet, 1st Section Ian Ross and 8th Open. Falaise 1st section was Douglas Spittal from Glasgow. Douglas was 86th Open.

Leicester Young bird open
Walker & Wilson win the Silver Medal for 1st open. Adam Luke of the partnership Luke and Peters wins second open and 2nd section B and a Bronze medal I have a photo of Adams 2nd open by kind permission of Duncan Knox. 3rd Open is Mel Bell Junior of Coldingham also wins a bronze medal for 3rd section B. Gregor Macaulay from forfar wins section C and a Bronze Medal and 5th open. 1st section D is John Mc Neil Broxburn and a Bronze Medal. 1st section E is John Alston of Ravensturther and a Bronze Medal. 1st section F is Barry Mc Crindle and son Glasgow and a Bronze Medal. And 1st section A is Mr & Mrs Graham from Ecclefechan and a Bronze medal.

The first three winners in all sections including the Leicester young bird open will receive a superb Bronze Medal award. There will be 25 bronze medal winners. Diplomas will be awarded to all open positions. I draw attention to the open positions printed these were taken from the original result sheets and there may be slight differences in the finalised results to the members positions.

Our Website
Stuart Malcom from Campsie has set up a website for the SNRPC. This site is still in its infancy but once it has been uploaded with all the relevant information it will be very informative. To make contact my email for the website is ian@snrpc.co.uk and the website is http://www.snrpc.co.uk you can also contact Stuart at stuart.malcom4/snrpc/Gallery.htm. We also have information on the website of Pigeonbasics.com this has been updated regularly and its web address is: http://www.pigeonbasics.com/clubs/snrpc/.

Sam Ovens
There could not be many pigeon people in the pigeon world who did not know the name Sam Ovens and also that of his wife Sheila. Sadly, on Monday the 17th of October 2005. Shiela, after a short illness, passed away. Sheila was Sam’s staunch partner of 47 years and was very supportive of Sam in all he participated in. The pigeons, their Garden, walking, the Ministry, local politics and of course his exemplary chairmanship of the SNFC. His legacy of straight talking fairness and not being easily diverted from the job on hand turned the SNFC back to solvency. He was purely interested in what would happen to pigeon racing generally not motivated, nor distracted by the personal agendas of others. Speaking to Sam the other night he reminded me of a number of occasions that he and Sheila had been in my company, to him these occasions with his wife and their family had been very important and that Sheila was always at his side. In this day and age when the age old rules of living life have been turned on there head, it is refreshing to find people like Sam ovens and his live long wife and partner Sheila holding true to these very rules. From myself and from the many people I have spoken to we offer our condolences for your loss. I am certain that your three daughters will be source of comfort and help in the days ahead and together with your own brand of tenacity soften your loss.

To finalise this autumn report I would draw to the reader’s attention to certain letters that have been appearing in the fancy press. Many people have thought, understandably that I have been dabbling in writings other than for the SNRPC. I am not the writer of these letter’s. I am the Press release officer for the new SNRPC. I Sign my name Ian M Brown and I am not in the business of writing weekly articles and sending to the letters page. I have enough problems trying to collate information on the SNRPC without any other hassle and whilst on this subject of information would explain my situation.

I do not visit lofts for the purpose of loft reports, nor will I be phoning for information on same other than when we have a sale, I will try and contact all fanciers who are donating a pigeon to the sale for information on their bird, or to clarify information I have received. If any members of the SNRPC wish to send me information on their performances or any other fanciers performances or whom they think should get a mention then I will be more than happy to receive such. In fact it is extremely important that I have a dialogue with as many members as possible but as you must understand it must come from you the member first. I would also mention that when I receive information I probably would not use it immediately but collate it together with other information, to produce an article at a later date.

I wish to ensure that accurate, current, informative news is representative of where the SNRPC is coming from and going to and not try and send small articles just for the sake of having something in the press. It is your Club. The committee and its officials are working hard to create a Club that takes heed of the members wishes so please contact me on 01577 840358 or email me at ian@ianmbrown.wanadoo.co.uk or you can write me at the following address: Ian M Brown, Cocklaw House, Powmill, Nr Dollar, Clackmannanshire.
