New measures to help prevent the spread of avian influenza have been agreed by the European Commission, Decision 2005/745/EC adopted by the EU on 21st October requires member states to ban birds at markets, shows, fairs and similar events. It may be possible to authorise some events to go ahead based on a veterinary risk assessment specific to that event.
Domestic legislation bringing these measures into effect is expected to be in force by Friday 28th October.
Show organisers would be required to obtain a special licence to allow events affected by the new requirements to take place, please call the DEFRA Helpline on 08459/33 55 77 for more information on how to apply for a licence.
Please note that there will be seperate arrangements will be made in Scotland and Wales.
