The Scottish National Racing Pigeon Clubs Young bird Open Race from Leicester, Our First Racing seasons final race for 2005
Sensational 1st open win
Walker&Wilson of StAbbs have unbelievably made racing pigeon history by winning their 4th first Open win in the SNRPCs young bird open from Leicester on Monday the 12th September 2005. This is their 5th first open win in 12 months having been 1st open last year in the young bird open of September 2004.
With an Entry of 873 birds and after a 2 day old over, a-liberation was achieved on Monday morning the 12 of September 2005 at 10 am.
Clearing skies and a light Northeast wind at the race point with variable winds en-route, broken cloud with good sunshine clearing the fog, would give our young birds a fair test after the 2 day holdover. A reasonable race was envisaged with first birds maybe doing 35 miles per hour plus.
Robert Walker and Jim Wilson timed their first pigeon at 14.38. After it having only flown some four and a half hours for the 231miles 1278 yards making a velocity of 1463.71 winning another amazing 1st Open and 1st section B in the SNRPC. This was the first of twelve birds they timed all to be placed within the 65 available open diploma positions. Congratulations to the partnership on an exceptional years national racing, a record that may stand for many years to come and will be very difficult to beat.
2nd Open goes to Luke and Peters of Dunbar
This is another well-known partnership in section B who timed at 14.56 to take 2nd open and 2nd Section B flying 241 miles 586 yards on a velocity of 1432.21. The partnership timed another 4 pigeons to take open diplomas.
3rd Open Mel Bell Jnr Coldingham
Mel Bell Timed at 14.49 to take 3rd open and 3rd section B flying 230 miles.1655 yards Velocity 1406.
Mel also times 7 other birds to take open diplomas
4th Open Stewart Roberts of Ayton
Stewart is new newcomer to the result sheet and times at 14.45 flying 228 miles on a velocity of 1405, winning 4th Section B and Stewart has 4 other birds on the open list.
5th Open G Macaulay of Forfar 1st Section C
This fancier’s bird had been flying well and definitely up with the leaders. Timed at 16.09 flying 294 miles650 yards to take 5thopen and 1st section C this bird was well favoured and certainly has not let his owner down. A second pigeon timed at 14.36 takes 46th open and 5th section C
41st Open and 2nd section C. John Ellis Wellbank
John Timed at 16.15 flying 279 miles1698 yards John has had an exceptional season.
43rd Open and 3rd Section C. Andy Thomson Dundee
Andy after timing his section winner manages to time two other birds to take open diplomas and another one to take a section position only good flying.
With the prevailing wind from the south, our young birds came through very steady and with only 120 yards per minute separating the 1st 65 open diploma winners, only section positions were left for sections A, D, E and F.
The following are section winners only:
1st section A. Mr&Mrs Graham Eclefechan
Flying 191 miles 1665 yards on a velocity of 1119.38
1st section D. John McNeil Broxburn
John timed his first pigeon at 16.02 flying 249 miles 1179 yards on a velocity of 1213. John takes the first 6 section positions in section D
1st Section E. J&I Alston Ravenstruther
This partnership also took 2nd, 9th and 10th section E. Their 1st section winner timed at 16.43 flying 238miles 1006yards on a velocity of 1041.
3rd Section E. K Donoughe of Carnwarth
This fancier was also 8th section E he timed his first bird at 16.55 flying 236miles 1191 yards on a velocity of 1003
1st and 3rd Section F. Barry McCrindle & son of Glasgow
These fancier’s are working hard at their pigeons timed their young birds at 17.52 and 18.28 flying 259 miles on velocities of 964 and 896.
2nd section F. James Kerr of Bishopbriggs
This fancier flies some 261 miles and timed at 18.27 with a velocity of 903.
Most fanciers have had good returns with the east side having the quicker returns. For the south central and west it appears that the birds may have over flown and had to work back, for whatever reason the disparity in velocities is quite distinct as one moves across country. This problem has always been with us and is the nature of pigeon racing especially when flying in a national race.
I applaud all who race their young birds to these distances and would mention that I know that many more birds were timed in all sections but will not appear on any result. I congratulate them on entering their birds and know that our committee hope they will continue in the future to give this same commitment to the SNRPC and national pigeon racing. This has been a great final race for 2005 and the SNRPC.
Controllers Report – Saturday
Spoke to convoyer Mathew Boyle at 0705hours and he told me of pretty poor conditions at the race point and these conditions were confirmed by Steve Appleby and he told me of very heavy downpours on the line of flight and there was no prospect of these clearing today. I then contacted Barnet Kenny and we decided to instruct the convoyer to hold over.
Sunday
At 0700hours convoyer Mathew Boyle reported poor conditions at the race point with heavy cloud cover, this was confirmed by Steve Appleby who predicted that Northern England and Scotland would be dry with sunny periods developing this morning, however the Midlands and southern regions would be affected by low cloud and fog in many areas this morning especially in the south east where the heavier cloud is present, it was expected the sun would break through the cloud in some areas but he doubted if it would clear in time for a liberation.
Contacted the convoyer and Steve just after 0900hours and they reported no change in the conditions in the liberation Area, so after speaking to Barney we decided at 0925 hours to instruct the convoyer to hold over.
Monday
Contacted the convoyer at 0710 hours and he reported much improved conditions from yesterday at the race point with the sun starting to break through however on speaking to Steve Appleby he told us of thick fog in various parts of the line of flight and this would take some time to clear, so after a couple of hours the fog started to clear and we decided on a liberation at 1000hours. Convoyer Mathew Boyle liberated the birds at 1000hours into a light North East wind and they cleared the race point inside 2 minutes.

--------
Monday the 12th of September 2005 saw the liberation of 873 young birds at 10 am after a 2 day old over into a light North east wind with clearing skies.
114 members had entered for this last open race of the Scottish racing season with the following section entries.
Section A 4 section B 330 section C 260 section D 74 section E 151 and section E 54. Not bad in sipte of the troubled young bird racing we have had.
It is hoped that the birds will be doing around 35 miles per hour maybe even a little faster as the winds are light but variable though the cloud will be broken with plenty of sun. I will try and give some information later tonight as and when I recieve same.
Our President George Wilson is now resting at home and slowly recovering I still have to speak to him,as we did not wish to disturb him in recovery. I am sure that all members will join me in wishing him a speedy recovery.
If the weather is anything to go by here at Powmill then I am sure that a steady good race will be the order of the day. I wish all who are competing a great final race and every success.
