John Harcus from St Andrews: John, a consistent and well-known flyer in the Fife Federation had an outstanding Maidstone with a remarkable result any fancier would have been over the moon with of any of the positions. John sent 21 Birds to Maidstone to win 1st Open which is achievement in this long hard race but he also won 5th, 7th, 9th, 14th, 16th and 19th Open. Seven birds in the first 19 from an entry of 1270 Birds! He also took the first seven Positions in the St. Andrews club flying 374 miles! Thank goodness that he ran out of thimbles!
John’s First pigeon was a yearling blue cock, sitting 10-day eggs Vel:1393, he won fourth club, 5th fed Ripon as an YB. Sire was first open Maidstone in the Fed 2001 and 3rd amalgamation. His Sire and Dam was bred by Robert Barnaby-Pickering the Dam won first Thurso and first Lerwick the following week. Imbrecht bloodlines. The Grandsire also bred first Midlothian Fed, sixth Amalgamation. The Dam of the Blue Cock was Matt McLaughlin bloodlines
His next two Birds dropped together, first in the clock was a 2 year-old blue cock Vel:1349 sitting eggs and feeding two large YB’s. He won first Ripon, first Wakefield 9th Open Fed Wakefield. This season, he had previously won fourth Kelso, second Tow Law 5th Fed, 1st club 1st fed Wakefield, 1st club 25th fed Ripon 2. Sire and Dam are Karel Boeckx, Belgium. The G/Sire bred first Open N.I.P.A. YB for Robin Orr in Northern Ireland, from an entry of 24,809 Birds!
Next in the Clock was a Yearling mealy cock Vel:1347 sitting 12-day eggs. He flew the YB National last year and was bred by John Forbes Midlothian and is Van Hee X John’s own Family.
John’s fourth bird Clocked was another yearling, a cheq cock sitting 12 day Eggs Vel:1331. This Bird has previously won 9th Open Fed Wakefield, 7th Fed and 109th Open Cheltenham the following week! The Sire is Matt McLaughlin X Jock Trail X John Honeymoon. The dam is pure Matt McLaughlin.
John then clocked his next three birds in the space of six minutes. John flies a 100% natural, feeds Verse-Laga Breeding Mix and Bamfords Channel. Fed once a day in their nest boxes. Moors Gold is put in the water; no training is undertaken with the birds out several times daily. He keeps twelve pairs of stock birds that are paired in December. With 20 pairs of racers paired up in February. He bred fifty YB’s this season, with half put on the Darkness system and the other half on natural. For the doubters of the Darkness system, John’s first four yearlings in the clock in this race were on darkness last season. His second bird was also on darkness as an YB.
