Update: 11am Monday 11th
Up North Combine pigeons at Lillers liberated at 7:10am, Etampes moved to Clermont and liberated at 6:30am.
I have received a few words from Mr Joe Murphy (PRO of the SNFC):
I would like to wish all members of the UNC all the very best in their race from Lillers and Estamps this weekend if this is the 100 years of pigeon racing then what a wonderful achievement. It is just like the SNFC and the history of both clubs should be preserved and the traditions upheld. Our forefathers were forward thinking fanciers and we have some of these in our present day membership so we should use them to make pigeon race progress into the 21st century. I know it will be hard to get some fanciers to change as they are set in their ways but if we don't move on we as a sport will be left behind. Publicity is what the name of the game is all about and we should be highlighting our achievements and the generous donations we make to charity every year. Had I not read that this was the 100 years on your web page (Pigeonbasics.com) then I would never have known and the UNC should have been publicizing this in all the pigeon weeklies. Again good luck to everyone who has taken part in these races as the UNC are a fantastic organisation. We in Scotland have had some wonderful pigeon's progeny from UNC pigeons over the years. I look forward to reading how these races transpire and to see who the winners are in both races. Joe

Later today (Friday 8th July 2005) will see the first of the events to celebrate the Up North Combine’s Centenary. One thousand and twenty-four birds have been sent to Lillers, France in the first of the special ‘two-bird’ races planned for the year.
Back in 1905 a group of forward thinking fanciers sat round a table and brought a number of north-east federations together for the first race from Jersey. Liberated at 5am on the 17th of July 1905, 1,029 pigeons made their homeward flight in a light North wind. The winner was to be William Sheldon of Jarrow on a velocity of 1039ypm; an average speed of over 35mph for the 400 mile journey.
Fast forward nearly 100 years and five less pigeons are on the starting line for the 350 miles to cover from Lillers.
Weather permitting these birds will be liberated this morning, as will the convoy at Etampes, France in the UNC’s normal race programme.
