Race Report
'Ebony Louise' wins the BICC Tours race
The birdage for this race was down on last year to 2037 but the number of fanciers entering rose by 80 members. The breakdown is Ash 16/177, Basildon 43/475, Grove 37/347, Higham 25/235, Horndean 33/327, Horsham 14/145, Norwich 18/136, Rugeley 6/56, Stowmarket 20/139, making a total of 290 members sending 2,037 birds. This turned out to be a very hard race with only 87 birds recorded by at the time of this report. The atmospheric pressure conditions with the east wind have no doubt had a lot to do with this based on the line of flight information out of Tours. I always point out at this stage that these are 1st bird reports only.
The winner of 1st Sec E 1st Open is a very good fancier from Laindon Jimmy Richards who is no stranger to the winner's enclosure. This is only his second year on the South and is very pleased with the performances to date having figured in some good races. On the North road Jimmy's highlights are having won 3x1sts, 4x2nds, 3x3rds in the London North Road Combine and 3x1sts in the Essex Combine so plenty of winning experience to turn South. Other memorable winnings are 12 RPRA awards that are a treasured part of his racing. There are quite a few fanciers changing to the South route and Jimmy was saying that he is enjoying it because he can get more of the longer races which is what he is looking for. It is now a case of he can get a good race with a bit of distance nearly every week during the main part of the season compared with a handful on the North. The winner is a ylg black hen raced on the w/h and competing her 5 th crossing of the season, made up of Falaise, Alencon and three times to Tours. Jimmy has been racing the hens on w/h with the cocks being the old stagers of 10 to 12 yrs old. However Jimmy felt that they were not getting the excitement that you would expect from w/h hens so he made a major change. The change was to move in the younger cocks and the change was dramatic, the hens appeared to light up with excitement, the rest now being history. Another good move was to leave this winning hen with her cock for one hour longer that the other's. They played about together and were really happy and content together. Jimmy is thinking ahead and has his eye set on pairing his latest National winner to his LNRC winner of 03, his aim is always to pair the best to the best. To make sure that the pigeons get the best training they are also trained against the wind, which is something that I have heard a lot doing lately. On the racing side Jimmy was also saying that he is very please with the hen's because they have been keeping up and more often than not been beating the w/h cocks. Jimmy would like to thank all those who have helped and advised him over the years in a sport that he is enjoying more than ever. I had a good talk to Jimmy and he was saying that he was going to call his National winner “Lucky Louise” and I laughed. He asked me why and I pointed out that later in the day we were going to a christening for a great grand daughter and she was being christened “Ebony Louise”. So with the breeding being the well-known Krauth Flying Ebony and having a Louella pigeon also in the breeding the name was changed.
2nd Sec E 2nd Open goes to a local to the winner with Alan Scarborough who saw home a 2y blue chequer w/h cock with a few minor prizes in the bag. This is from the Wall-Lunt-Green-Galley lines when crossed with those of Wal Zoonjens the Dutch master fancier. Alan is known as a small team man and races a 12 w/h cocks with 8 hens on the same system with a young bird team of 25. The feeding has recently changed and is now the Verele Laga widowhood Superstar mix that is proving to be as good as they have been fed on in the past. Alan was saying that he ahs been otherwise occupied this year and has not raced as much as he would have liked, his clubs being the NFC, BICC, LSECC and a local club. Even with his small team Alan has had his success including 2 nd Open with the NFC from Herstal and 1 st LSEC Tours. Alan was in a bit of a hurry when I spoke to him at Jimmy Richards home so perhaps next time we can gather a bit more info.
Next on the list we have Colin Hoskins of Bexleyheath, Kent who timed a yearling chequer hen who is one of several 'spare' hens and this one paired to another hen and was sent sitting four eggs. To motivate her that bit more a small youngster was slipped under her before basketing. Tours BICC was her fifth Channel race of the year all old bird's only race from the Channel with both the BICC and the London & South East Classic. She had a two-week break before Tours but was kept going with plenty of roadwork. Her breeding is from the Janssen Van Loon x Wildemeersch lines with the JVL sire being bred by Ritchie Ryder of the Wirral and the dam by Les Woof and family of County Durham.
Ken Abbott comes into 1st centre section 4th open with a blue chequer ylg hen having only here second ever race. She is raced on the natural and was sent sitting and when she returned Ken did get her back on her eggs hoping the cock would be back so that they would soon be ready for another race but he has failed so she left the eggs. She is bred from a hen off Colin Puddephatt being a g-g-daughter of their 1st sec 2nd open Pau NFC winner when Colin raced with his brother John. The sire is a Van wanroy off birds from the Ponderosa and is closely related to Kliene Donkere, this cock is a winner from Saintes. While we were talking Ken was saying that he was considering sending the sire of this weeks p/winner to Pau with the NFC (might be on its way now). Ken races the channel more or less every week so has a good team of pigeons that are fed on a mix of Veresele Laga Super w/h and Natural Concord. He also pointed out that he uses Ad Herb and Gemthrepax.
5th Open sees Peter Foster clock a 2y late bred chequer cock bred by George Gander of Hove, who at the age of 91yrs and is still a very keen fancier. George has raced pigeons for 80 years very successfully and has recently put together a new family of birds for future racing. George purchased the NATERGAELE CROSS STAFF VAN REETS Sire and Dam from Tom Roden of Cheshire at a cost of £450.00 for the pair, which has proven to be a good investment as the pair had already won 16 races for Tom and are responsible for numerous other winners. The Chequer cock 04453 flew a couple of Guerseys with Brighton and Worthing Five Bird Club and then went onto Saints with the NFC last year. This year he flew Alencon with the BICC and St Nazaire with the NFC again before being sent to Tours sitting on 10 days. On his return he was in excellent condition and a credit to BICC conveyors. Pete Foster was on the verge of giving up the sport last season but decided instead to downsize his team to just 12 birds which he now fly's natural with an open loft.
A long-standing name in the sport is that of Derek & Jackie Reis from Honeysuckle Lofts in Colchester, the name has come up again with 6 th open in the BICC Tours race. The pigeon is Red Cheq yearling cock flown on the widowhood system one of 30 cocks raced by the partnership during 2005. The cock was having its third trip across the channel this year, its breeding is Honeysuckle Janssen from their old original Janssen's crossed with an Emiel Deweerdt Cock. Even though they are well known for their Janssen family they have had the Deweerdts since the mid eighties, which is even longer. The team are fed on Versele laga corn with supplements from Gem products. They race their birds in the Thames North & Eastern Counties FC, which has some 90 members also their local club the Colchester Inv. After many years racing north road they turned completely south road last season the yearlings are know starting to make their mark.
Joe Raeburn is the West section winner with a blue bar yearling hen that was flown parted from her mate that is the system the hens are flown parted from the cocks until the big nationals and then sent sitting they exercise after the widowhood cocks evening flight. They are then trained as much as Joe thinks they need and this can be a heavy schedule because all training is done before work starting at 04.30. This winning blue hen has flown in the yb Fougeres National FC race in 2004 and this year she has had three Picauville races before going to St Nazaire with the National winning 339th open 36th sec G she was one of 32 sent which Joe had 22 pigeons by 13.17. All birds are fed on Versele-laga Gerry plus i.c. mixed with start plus i.c and then the last few feeds with superstar plus ic. This hens breeding is top class as she is a direct daughter from "Champion Gwen" winner of 1st open San Sebastian Grand National FC on the day of lib. 22nd open Pau 2nd sec G. 88th open Nantes. The sire of the blue hen is "Nicolaas" a direct son of Laureaat Barcelona winner of 1st International Barcelona, which was on loan from Patrick Bros. Joe's targets, now are Pau National and the Dax International then onto the NFC Saintes to finish the old bird season off.
