Romanian pigeon fanciers sent 850 racing pigeons to the Olympic games in Athens, but reports are that only around 50 made it home.
One of Romania’s top fanciers, Mihai Popescu told the newspaper Libertatea, "My first pigeon arrived home after eight days of travelling." Where usually the distance from Greece to Romania would not take more than a day.
Another fancier added, "We've been to competitions of this kind before but never have so many pigeons got lost."
Explanations doing the rounds are that the birds’ homing ability was affected due to the large number of satellites used for television broadcasting; or due to military radars located on Greek territory.
