British International Championship Club
Alencon

Due to changes on the continent the third race of the season was moved over to Alencon where a very good entry ensured that the members would have a good competitive race. I gather a few were a little surprised with the result as the wind was blowing fairly briskly from the West. But with such a strong field the top positions were spread through the Centre and Eastern section, as we are all aware there is always going to be an advantage but good pigeons do make their quality stand out. The birdage was great for the club with a total of 3101 sent by 290 members broken down to Ash 17/220. Basildon 58/831. Grove 45/351. Higham 41/482. Horndean 41/464. Horsham 17/184. Norwich 26/160. Rugeley 13/135. Stowmarket 32/274. This is a great send for the club and one that will see the club’s improvement continue.

As always I must remind you that these fanciers included are on first bird verifications and not necessarily their finishing positions plus they are done on the minute without the seconds which can make a difference on a tight finish.

1st Centre section 1st open goes to Mr & Mrs V Emberson & Son of Banstead who sent the following. “I am sending the information regarding the winner of the BICC race from Alencon 28/05/05 the partnership consists of Vic, Louise and Neil Emberson with my self doing the stock side of the partnership. The cock that won is a blue yearling widowhood cock which we have decided to name "VALIANT LEADER" this cock is a half brother to our winner of 1st Open Alliance of Specialist Clubs Milllenium race 2000 and Car winner "ALLIIANCE LEADER" and is also very closely related to "ELLIE" our Old Hens National winner in 2004 from Fougeres being her Uncle. VALIANT LEADER raced the whole young bird season going to both the London and South East Classic races from Guernsey on the second Guernsey race being clocked second bird to our loft making him one of our most consistent young birds. VALIANT LEADER had also raced the old bird programme very consistently this year. Our team of pigeons have been cultivated over the years in to a team of our own Van Reets. We race a team of 20 widowhood cocks that are on a basic widowhood system, which are fed on a basic widowhood mix. The team of cocks race every inland race then every channel race up to 300 miles. Even though we concentrate on the classic club racing we still compete every week at local clubs the Dorking Coly (Surrey Fed) and Southdowns (London Fed). This year so far we have won 10x1sts topping the surrey fed three times. Yours in the sport Carl Emberson”.

2nd sees yet another good performance from Grimsby fancier Vinny Wilkinson who is more than delighted and a fancier who appears to be happy all the time, or he has every time I have spoken to him. Vinny wins the section with a ylg blue chequer hen that is similar lines to the previous race prize winner from Falaise 2. Vinny does give credit to his friend Mike Thompson who has helped and advised no end with the results backing up that advice. The race team consists of 25 old birds racing with 15 of those being on what Vinny considers to be his own “Sort of widowhood” that has proven successful. When thing he does do as is very often the case, he pairs the birds for the longer National races that usually works in line with the first race of the season for the NFC. The birds are fed on Paloma Super mix with the Barnsley Blend plus a few peanuts. When I spoke to Vinny for information on his previous performance with the club he was saying how happy he was, so I wonder how he feels have done an even better job.

Nik Seabourne & Di Bailey from Norwich are 3rd, Nik was telling me that he has had pigeons more or less for the last 29yrs with a little success on the North Road. They started racing again on the South road only last year after obtaining some of their old Janssen lines from friends. There were also some birds from Nik’s brother and 15 Kuypers from Louella the previous year; these were only trained as babies as is the case with all their youngsters. The system has worked with no sickness problems of any kind cropping up in their first year. They don’t give the birds any medication for worms, canker etc but if a pigeon goes off they receive a few drops of cider vinegar every day straight down their throat until they recover. The only other thing they use is bicarbonate of soda once a week in the water all the year round. Di being her in doors is the gentle one with the pigeons and she is a great help and appreciated. In this Alencon race two birds dropped together and either one could have gone in the clock first. That honour went to a chequer pied hen raced on the w/h and is one of the batch of 15 mentioned earlier. Like the rest she was trained to 90mls as a young bird and then her first race was with the BICC at Falaise 267mls where she was 2nd Norfolk & Suffolk Continental Classic and then Gellainville. She was trained this year to 30mls then sent to two club races to 140mls and set up for this Alencon race being taken 20mls on the morning of basketing to return home to her mate until basketing for the race in mid afternoon. To be fair we must include both birds as they dropped together and Nik has supplied the info on the fax. She is a blue hen bred by Nik’s brother Eddy from birds bought at the bereavement sale of Mr Churchyeard of Kessingland some 3yrs ago. Again un-raced as a baby with her first race being Falaise with the BICC 2 and second Tours as a ylg, this year she was set up as with the other hen. The birds are fed on one eggcup each from a 50/50 race mix and depurative and they are brought on in condition in the last few days with peanuts, linseed, hemp and rapeseed as an addition. They have found that racing on some kind of separated system the birds gain a superior kind of fitness so it has to be favoured, leaving the motivation of the nest, eggs and young to the end of the season.

Syd Jones form Norwich celebrated his 76th birthday by clocking a blue Janssen w/h cock that has all the best bloodlines of Janssen Bros “019” on one side and the Janssen Van Loon on the other. Syd was pleased with the race sending four and getting them in good time, this same cock was also 60th Falaise. Syd was telling me that he has flown the North Road for years and turned to the south, he then joined the BICC for the 05 season and has started off very well indeed. He still races both North and South with many wins to combine level on the North road and does admit to liking the Combine races out of Scotland. There are a reasonable team housed consisting of 17 w/h cocks and 4prs on the natural system. Syd sounds quite a character and one who you would like to sit and listen to over a few pints.

There are many good fanciers competing in the BICC and one such loft is that of Dave & Gary Heywood who had two drop together in this race with the first in the clock being a 5y Brasspenning from John Gerrard. This cock is called “The Guernsey Cock” because as a baby he was 1st club 12th combine Guernsey then as a ylg he scored across the channelfrom Herstal in the NFC/BICC. Then as a 2y he was 1st club Le Ferte Bernard 26th combine, as a 3y he had 2 top 20 positions in the BICC. His success continued into the 4y stage when he was 1st sec Falaise in a strong North East wind plus 2 top 20 positions in the BICC. As I say two drpopped together with the other being a Robert Venus Supercrack pigeon from stock that Dave & Gary brought direct on a visit to his lofts two years ago. The pigeons are raced on the traditional w/h and are let out at first light because they both leave for work early. They feed on Versele Laga mix and do from time to time try other brands as they are always looking to improve. Their main aim is to go to Pau with a team of pigeons that they feel can do the job and they will persevere until this happens.

6th open on telephone times goes to Mr & Mrs Kevin Gray from Greenhithe who saw home their good slatey ylg cock bred from the Hession SVR lines on one side with the Van Loons of Marcel Buijjse on the other. I reported that the Combine winner was missing from an earlier race and to date that cock has still not returned. Kevin having been into sprinting for so many years is now finding that the birds do not drop in so quickly when they are racing from across the water. Due to health problems Kevin drastically reduced both the race and stock teams at these lofts and he got to a stage when they nearly all went but as previously reported is happy to say is that he didn’t get rid of all the birds but now has just 4prs of stock to go with the 22prs of racers on the w/h. this could well have been what was required because we all keep too many pigeons. To date Kevin is highly delighted with the change to National racing because it has given him that little bit extra enthusiasm. The pigeon he clocked this week was also 5th section in the Falaise 1 race. From the 20 sent all pigeons were back in good time and he clocked 6 pretty close together. The only down side was that the pigeons all came out of Hastings which is not what is required to win in this type of competition. What Kevin did add was that he was impressed with the way the pigeons were when they returned. He also pointed out that the people on the transporter really do look after the pigeons, a first class job.

The Western section goes to David Aldred who is another fancier who has joined the ranks to send info via the Internet, much easier on the press officers around the country. “I would like to say a few thanks to Mrs Barbara Kennett for the hard work she does for the marking station and transporting the birds to the pick up point. Also my brother Brian, who looks after the stock birds and bred the section winner, also thanks to Keith Bolas the local trainer. I sent 15 birds to the, race all hens and the first time over the channel for the all. I had 3 birds within minutes of each other all looking in good condition, so big thanks to the convoyer. First bird is a 2 year old, followed by 2 yearlings, all out of the natural loft on eggs at present 10 – 14 days sitting. 1st bird is a chequer-pied ww, Gevaert Van Schoorisse from Louella X Luc Van de Hoek. She was raced to the coast as a young bird, flew 1 channel race as a yearling and this is her 1st race this season. The 2nd and 3rd birds are Janssen x Jan Arden and were on their 2nd race of the season. They were fed on Masterfly breeding mix, which is sold locally. I had 11 birds return on the day so was pleased with the outcome. Finally a big thanks to my wife and children for all their help which makes life easier with all the work needed to keep a team of racing pigeons”.

Remember I am still looking for further information on the BICC winners and performance pigeons.
