Hawks put an End to Disney Pigeon Program...

Disney World, Florida has put an end to pigeons being a part in their daily shows as a result of attacks by the Red-Tailed Hawk.

Pigeons have been released as part of acts such as; Cinderella's Surprise Celebration at the Magic Kingdom and Beauty and the Beast at Disney-MGM Studios; a tradition kept for nearly 30 years.

During the shows, the pigeons soared over the parks before returning to nearby roosts. It was during these flights that the defenceless birds were grabbed by the hawks' sharp talons, Disney spokeswoman Diane Ledder said.

Red-tailed hawks, the largest found in Central Florida, are a protected species, meaning it's illegal to disturb them without the permission of state wildlife officials.

Disney did add that attacks have only occurred recently, but would not comment as to how many have been killed. They are now looking to re-home around 200 birds.
