During the world wars, the Army Pigeon Service dropped upto 16,000 pigeons behind enemy lines. The birds, if found, were used to send information back to Allies in the UK. Each one needed a specially made parachute to drop from the plane, safely to the ground. The parachute was attached to a ‘flask-like’ container which held the pigeon, and certain other items such as; an amount of food, and some instructions for the release of the bird.
The story has recently inspired the animation film Valiant, where a small bird (Valiant) gets into the 'Royal Homing Pigeon Service' and endeavours to return with an important message; avoiding the enemy's falcons on the way!
An exhibition at Monmouth's Nelson museum, has recently opened including one of the original pigeon parachutes.
