MORE than £10,000-worth of racing pigeons have been killed in a suspected arson attack on a Barnsley allotment site.
Some 72 pigeons and a large quantity of eggs due to hatch this weekend were destroyed by the blaze on Roberts Street in Cudworth, at around 3am on Saturday.
Pigeon fancier Stephen Cunliffe, 49, who has won numerous championships over the last 32 years said he had been devastated by the attack and does not have the money or the desire to build up his stock again.
"Every one of them was killed and it just makes you want to give up," said Mr Cunliffe, of Cudworth. "I am trying to clear it all up but every time I go up there I am heartbroken and I am having to make sure all the carcasses are burnt.
"We have been having a lot of trouble on the allotments and the police have been called out a lot."
